We have a cabin that we go to on weekends on a lake. It is a beautiful retreat from the city and from the everyday fast paced life. My wife wanted to put Hosta's around the edges of the yard to add some color and contrast to grass. The deer love Hosta's. They let them get about five inches tall and then they eat them down to the ground.

If you live where there are deer, you have experienced similar disappointments. There are several plants that deer will not bother. Plant these plants where you have deer problems, and they will avoid them. Deer will stay away from poisonous plants, fragrant plants, and fuzzy or thorny plants.

Poisonous plants. Plants like daffodils, foxglove, monkshood, bleeding hearts, forget me nots, lily of the valley, and poppies.

These are beautiful plants but are poison to deer and people if you eat them. They even work well if you plant them around plants that you want deer to stay away from.

Fragrant plants. Many herbs like Basil and sages, lavender, mint, geraniums, tomatoes, and marigolds turn deer off. They are also good at bringing good bugs to your garden. They also keep away nasty bugs and rodents. Make sure if you plant mint, you plant it in a container, or it will take over your entire garden.

Fuzzy or thorny plants. Plants like lamb's ear with fuzzy leaves are not plants deer like.

Several trees will also keep deer away. Deer avoids birch and honey locust. If you plant these plants around your Hosta's and other plants deer like, you can likely keep the deer from eating your other plants.
